This afternoon, our Emergency Medical Services (EMS) were dispatched to an explosion incident that occurred around 15:00 in Bramfischerville, close to the Engen garage. This incident involved a shack reportedly used by Zama Zamas, which was unfortunately the epicentre of the explosion.
EMS promptly responded and administered necessary care to those injured. One critically injured individual was transported by Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) Ambulance to a nearby hospital for immediate medical attention. On scene, we also had one individual with minor injuries and sadly, one fatality. The deceased remains on the scene, waiting for Pathology Services. Our thoughts go out to all those affected.
“Our Fire Safety team is currently on the scene, investigating the incident. Based on preliminary statements from witnesses present during the incident, there is speculation that the explosion may have been triggered by an explosive, possibly dynamite, which the victims reportedly attempted to connect to a car battery,” said MMC Dr. Mgcini Tshwaku.
Please note that these are preliminary observations, and we urge the public and media not to jump to conclusions. The Fire Safety team will conduct a comprehensive investigation, ensuring all aspects are thoroughly examined before any definitive statements are made regarding the cause of the explosion.
We appreciate the swift response of all emergency personnel involved and are assured that every effort is made to keep our city and its residents safe. The City of Johannesburg Municipality urges residents to report any suspicious activities to the authorities to prevent similar unfortunate incidents.
We will keep the public informed of any new developments in this matter as the investigation progresses.
