On Friday 17 March, the Chair of Chairs in the City of Joburg, Cllr Lloyd Phillips will lead multi-disciplinary team of officials including section 79 Committee members to an oversight visit in Riverlea to inspect three sites where illegal mining activity is taking place.

Various stakeholders including the office of the City's Ombudsman, Public Safety, and the Riverlea Mining Forum will form part of the oversight.

Illegal mining has caused great concern as shoot-outs often occur, endangering the lives of the residents. In February, police discovered bodies at one of the sites. The
community is even more worried that one of the illegal mining sites is close to a school, posing a potential danger to the lives of the learners and teachers.

Cllr Phillips has made a clarion call to all stakeholders involved to derive solutions to solve the issue of crime as the accompanying consequence of illegal mining in the
community of Riverlea and other parts of the city.

“We must resolve this long-standing problem speedily. This is the start; we will engage all relevant role players to work on a sustainable solution. Illegal mining has become a real danger to communities living close to these mines. We must prioritize the health and safety of residents."
