Councillor Kabelo Gwamanda from Al Jama-ah emerged victorious during a contest for the Mayoral position in the City of Johannesburg. 

Gwamanda was elected the news Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg during the 16TH Extra-Ordinary Council meeting held at the Constance Bapela Council Chamber in Braamfontein today.

Of the 270 councillors who makes up the Joburg Council, total of 268 councillors attended the meeting. 

The three nominations read out by the Speaker of Council, Cllr Colleen Makhubele included Cllr Funzela Ngobeni from Action SA, Cllr Mpho Phalatse from the democratic alliance and Cllr Kabelo Gwamanda from Al Jama-ah.

Councillors were briefed by the Independent Electoral Commission representative on the rules governing the elections.

Following the casting of ballot by all councillors present, counting commenced in earnest.

The announcement of the results by the Speaker of Council revealed the results as follows: A total of 266 votes were cast and there were no spoilt vote.

Cllr Funzela Ngobeni = 59
Cllr Mpho Phalatse = 68
Cllr Kabelo Gwamanda = 139

Following these results, the Speaker of Council declared Cllr Kabelo Gwamanda the executive mayor of the City of Johannesburg as duly elected by the house.
