The City of Johannesburg's Office of the Speaker of Council, in partnership with the Department of Home Affairs, brought essential government services closer to residents through the deployment of Home Affairs Mobile Units at Klipspruit West Recreation Centre on 30 July. The outreach programme enabled residents to access a range of Home Affairs services, including applications for identity documents and other civic services, within their community.
By bringing services closer to residents, the initiative helped reduce transport costs, save valuable time and remove barriers that can prevent people from accessing essential documentation.
Speaker of Council Cllr Margaret Arnolds said the partnership demonstrates the City's commitment to responsive and people-centred governance.
“Government must meet people where they are. Through this partnership with the Department of Home Affairs, we are ensuring that residents can access essential services without unnecessary costs and delays. This is what responsive and people-centred governance looks like," said Cllr Arnolds.

The outreach came two days before South Africa's final voter registration weekend on 1 and 2 August, ahead of the upcoming Local Government Elections. Access to identity documents is essential for many South Africans to access employment, education and social services, as well as participate fully in democratic processes.
Residents welcomed the convenience of having Home Affairs services available closer to home, particularly those who would otherwise have faced transport costs and long journeys to service centres.
One of the beneficiaries said the initiative made a meaningful difference to local residents. “They are saving us taxi fare. It's basically a blessing because some of us need IDs for jobs."
The Office of the Speaker said partnerships between different spheres of government are vital to delivering practical solutions that improve residents' lives. Taking services directly into communities helps government reach vulnerable residents, reduce service delivery barriers and promote greater inclusion.
