Schae Welcome (30) has always had a passion for learning and her recent qualification in Library and Information Science (LIS) brings her closer to her dream of one day becoming a librarian. Schae, a General Worker at Noordgesig Library, is a testimony to resilience and commitment after failure. After rewriting her matric examinations in 2015, she remained focused on building a career in libraries, taking every opportunity to grow personally and professionally.
Shae's recent qualification was financed through the City of Johannesburg's (CoJ) Sub-Ed scheme, and she is currently enrolled for her Honours in LIS.
Although she already had a teaching qualification, Schae joined the City in 2021, hopeful that it would open doors for growth. “When I applied for the General Worker post, I thought I'll use it as a way to work myself up and see where it takes me," she says.

Her love for libraries has only grown since joining Noordgesig Library. What she enjoys most about her job is serving residents and supporting young library users. “I appreciate the moments when learners say, 'Aunty, please help me with my homework'. That means I'm part of someone's growth and development."
Balancing work, family life and her studies proved challenging. During her studies, Schae was briefly hospitalised. Despite these setbacks, she remained determined and successfully completed her qualification.
She credits much of her success to the support of those around her, particularly her colleague, Mpho Matsoso.
“Mpho always gave me exposure to library programmes and included me in different activities. She also influenced my decision to further my studies in Information Science. She helped shape me and grow my love for libraries."
Schae also expresses heartfelt gratitude to her husband, Aston, and colleague Sello Modiba for their unwavering support.
“My husband, who also values education and holds a master's degree, has been my backbone and compass, guiding me every step of the way. Thank you to everyone who guided and supported me, especially my colleague Sello Modiba."
Growing up in Eldorado Park, Schae says she was taught the importance of respect and of always striving to improve herself. Outside of work and her studies, she enjoys spending time with her family. As a mother of two, aged five and seven, she says they are her biggest motivation. Her proudest moment came on 4 June when they watched her walk across the graduation stage.
“After the ceremony, my daughter said, 'Ma, I'm so proud of you'." For Schae, that moment made every challenge worthwhile.
