Soweto Pride 2026, themed “iSango leNkululeko – Our Heritage", united LGBTQIA+ communities, allies, and partners for a vibrant two-day celebration of dignity, equality, and belonging. Friday's Pride March began at Kwa Lichaba Chesanyama on Vilakazi Street, bringing together hundreds in solidarity. Dignitaries included Cllr Lefa Molise (Ward 39, Orlando West), Forum for the Empowerment of Women (FEW) Director Jade Madingwane, and representatives from the Embassy of Ireland, Embassy of the Netherlands, and the Delegation of Flanders in Southern Africa.
Other prominent guests, such as Justice Edwin Cameron, Cllr Makhafola (MMC of Health and Social Development), and Deputy Ministers Steve Letsike and Andries Nel, addressed the crowd, reaffirming commitments to safety, justice, and equal rights for all.
The programme featured moving speeches from civil society organisations including Iranti, Uthingo Network, and Access Chapter 2. Dignitaries, diplomats, and activists stood together, demonstrating the power of public accountability and partnership. The event honoured trailblazers like Simon Nkoli, and welcomed families, faith leaders, government officials, and youth.
“Our programme created space to reflect on the issues affecting LGBTQIA+ people, celebrate our constitutional rights, and engage with government, civil society, diplomatic missions, faith leaders, and community organisations," said Relebogile Setshedi from FEW.
Saturday's Queer Joy Celebration at Kwa Lichaba turned into a colourful showcase of resilience and joy. Attendees celebrated with music, performances, and cultural displays, highlighting both heritage and diversity.
“Saturday was an opportunity for people to simply be themselves, enjoy music, culture, performances, and connect in a space where they felt safe, affirmed, and celebrated," said Setshedi.
Reflecting on the weekend's impact, Setshedi said: “We are seeing greater understanding and acceptance. However, acceptance doesn't happen overnight. It happens through exposure, dialogue, storytelling, and relationships. Events like Soweto Pride help create opportunities for people to meet, learn, ask questions, and challenge assumptions."
This Heritage Month, let us celebrate our right to belong, and our shared responsibility to protect that right.
